Every college coach uses a recruiting board to evaluate his recruits. He may use numbers or letters to grade his recruits. For example, Nick Saban looks at height, weight and speed as he evaluates his recruits. The kids that have all of these aspects in his top tier receive a GRADE of 1 in each area.
The reason you want to know where you stand on the recruiting board is because a lot of coaches will tell you that you are their number one recruit when in FACT YOU ARE NOT. Why would they lie to a 17 or 18 year old? Because they want to keep you excited about their school...they want you to believe that you are their number one recruit.
By knowing where you stand on a coaches recruiting board will give you GREAT knowledge and power with other schools that are recruiting. What it means to be a number 2 or 3 recruit is that if their number 1 guy does not accept their offer then you are next in line.
If a coach tells you that you are their number 2 or 3 recruit that is fine. At least the coach is being honest with you, and now you can start playing the RECRUITING game with great knowledge to use against other coaches/schools and how to leverage this information for your number one choice.
If they tell you that you are their number 2 or 3 recruit, then at least you know the coach is being honest with you, and you should start finding out what has to happen to become their number one recruit. Typically, what it means to be a number 2 or 3 recruit is that if their number one guy accepts their offer then they may be done recruiting your position.
